The best dental software, by what you’re actually trying to do

“Best dental software” has no single answer, and any site that gives you one is guessing. A solo practice optimising for cost and a twelve-location DSO optimising for control are not shopping in the same market. Here are our picks by situation — with the reason, and the catch.

  1. 1

    Best for cost control

    Open Dental

    Open Dental Software, Inc. · On-premise · $199/month

Per-location pricing, a published fee schedule, and an open API. If you have IT support or are willing to buy it, nothing else keeps a multi-dentist practice this cheap.

The catch: Not natively cloud. Remote access means self-hosting, a third-party host, or a remote-desktop setup — an extra cost and an extra thing to secure.

  2. 2

    Best for groups and DSOs

    Dentrix Ascend

Henry Schein One · Cloud · Quote only

Cloud, native multi-location reporting, and the vendor most of your future hires will already know. You will pay for it, and you will have to ask what.

    The catch: No published pricing.

  3. 3

    Best cheap cloud

    tab32

    tab32 · Cloud · $125/month

The only cloud system here with a published price under $200/month. Watch the per-claim fees and the provider caps.

The catch: Per-claim and per-eligibility-check fees mean a busy practice’s real bill is well above the sticker price.

  4. 4

Best all-in-one for a new practice

    Oryx Dental Software

    Oryx Dental Software · Cloud · $650/month

Free until 200 patients or twelve months. For a start-up practice that removes essentially all software cost during the period you can least afford it.

The catch: The most expensive published entry price here at $650/month for two providers.

  5. 5

    Best for growing groups

    CareStack

    CareStack · Cloud · $829/month

Publishes tier pricing — rare at this end — and covers RCM, engagement and analytics in one contract instead of four.

The catch: "Starting at" means the real quote is negotiated; budget above the published figure.

  6. 6

    Best for large DSOs

    Denticon

Planet DDS · Cloud · Quote only

Built for many locations from the start, SOC 2 Type 2, and centralised control that retrofitted systems cannot match.

The catch: No published pricing, and enterprise contracts are the norm.

  7. 7

    Best for hiring and integrations

    Dentrix

Henry Schein One · On-premise · Quote only

The largest installed base in US dentistry. Staff arrive knowing it and almost every third-party product connects to it.

The catch: No published pricing at all — you cannot budget without going through sales.

  8. 8

    Best for imaging

    DentiMax

DentiMax · Cloud or on-premise · Quote only

Drives sensors from many manufacturers rather than locking you to one, which matters if your hardware is mixed.

    The catch: No published pricing.

Still deciding?

The two questions that narrow this fastest: do you want to own a server, and do you need one price you can see before you talk to anyone? Only 5 of 14 vendors answer the second one.
